OK, so you played League of Legends, Starcraft 2 and other real time strategies and - man - were they exciting and stimulating!
But something was missing.
After playing - even with other people online - you feel lonely again.
This almost seems like the same way I feel after I drink too much Mt Dew.
The reason I play games is to build relationships with people I see a lot during the day and week. The purpose of playing is not only to build brain connections but to integrate other people into those neural interconnections and this is about the only way I know of not feeling lonely.
The only thing I can say to explain this is that we must risk in order to attain reward. Playing with others in real life is a risk.
They may not like us.
So, if you feel lonely and isolated, get out and play with others in real life and take that risk ...
:-)
I wrote this as a way to deal with a friend's struggle with social anxiety. He is much better after I convinced him to go with me every week to play Munchkin, OGRE/GEV as well as other games at our local game shop.
People think that playing games is a waste of productive time.
I say that play is essential for healthy human development ... at all ages.

A short note on the virtue of RL board games...
