Just ran my Return of the Gods campaign yesterday. For those who haven't seen my other threads, mutants (like X-Men) are present in the world for the second time; long ago they were the kernel of truth behind the gods of myth. Accordingly I built a mutant template incorporating traits which are common in the myths of sundry cultures, including pride, temper, and lust, and I aimed for a bit of soap-opera flavor. It didn't happen, and after some fruitless discussion, I abandoned those efforts and went with the flow. Low and behold, some 8 months into roleplaying characters with superhuman powers, I just ran a session yesterday that was almost all dialog, discussions of the different plot threads, where those traits were on full display. The issue that brought matters to a head is a new PC (veteran player) whose power is extraordinary but uncontrollable: dreams made real. Some PCs imagined the possibility that her nightmare could bring a ravening unkillable monster into their midst, and they insisted she take precautions like wearing a power shackle when she sleeps. The anger, and the lack of concern displayed by some toward "lesser" beings, finally reminded me of the epic but pointless battles between gods of mythology such as Greek and Norse. So the lesson I suppose is a familiar one: Be patient.
