Making a Wyvern Knight, the Fire Emblem way!

vendredi 20 mars 2015

Hello all!

You may remember my thread about Pegasus Knights from Fire Emblem, as I loved Pegasus Knights thanks to being introduced to them by Florina, but then again, what about those who prefer the Wyvern Knights? What about those who prefer to ride dragon-like beasts (they are not true dragons, just tough as nail giant lizards with wings) as opposed to Pegasi?

Well, here is an answer:

Wyvern Knights from Fire Emblemare sort of a mirror image of Pegasus Knights: Tough as nail where Pegasus Knights are fragile, slow while Pegasus Knights are swift, sub-par luck while Pegasus Knights have high luck, tough as a brick against physical attacks, being among the hardest hitting units in the game (Wyvern Lord, their promoted versions, fight with axes instead of the swords Falcoknights (promoted Pegasus Knights) use), but they are somewhat susceptible to magic due to their low (relatively, they aren't worse than most non magical infantry, but compared to their Pegasus Knights counterparts, they don't have it that good) Resistance (Not that it matters much against damage spells as they have pretty much brick wall HP, but a good Sleep, or worse, Berserk staff is sure to wreck havoc on them). If you really want to nitpick, more recent games have them vulnerable to Thunder Magic, just like Dragons. They are also able to take to the high skies. Remember the battle in the middle of the clouds I mentioned in regards to Pegasus Knights? Wyvern Knights are fighting in the same battle. They move the same number of squares as their Pegasus Knights counterpart.

How does that translate into GURPS terms?

An Ally (Familiar) to represent the Wyvern.

A high ST and HT, but average DX.

More likely to pick the Axe Skill than Pegasus Knights.

Heavily armored.

The Wyvern must have good Basic Move to compensate for their lower Basic Speed.

Wyvern Knights are more likely to have scars than Pegasus Knights as they are both more likely to take and survive hits. Scarring could go either way, either horrid scarring that decrease their Appearance, or scars that give a rugged kind of good look (I'm looking at you, Vaida!).

Anything applicable to military units is applicable to Wyvern Knights, and there is also the fact that Wyverns are (usually) native to one country and as such it is unusual to see Wyvern Knights in mercenary groups or foreign countries. They definitely have a reputation for being tough as nails though (probably a +1 for interacting with military characters).

Did I forget anything?
