I was formulating a blog post about my approach to modern military combatives and some design decisions I made for a newish style for my game. I made a note to self that to kind of represent the era (early 1990's US Army), I was going to do without a Style Familiarity perk. I remembered the book saying that "stripped out" Self Defense styles often not having one, and I remembered off hand that it makes deceptions work less against you if you are fighting a co-stylist.
Well, technically you wont be fighting co-stylists with this much, so no loss there. Then I re-read the different lenses and realized that by not taking the SF perk, I evidently lose access to all the style perks and can't train the style's "hard" techniques. Except Self Defense makes exceptions for a few.
What does that actually mean, though? I get the face value, but that doesn't really prevent my users from learning the hard techniques based off the skills, does it? That sounds like a form of Incompetence. Further, can't you buy style perks with your regular perk allotment anyways?
Basically, other than not getting a bonus against deception, what's the real drawback to not having a style familiarity?
Thanks,
M.
