While "what was taxed" is interesting, I'm more interested in finding information about who was recruited to collect tax / who lobbied for tax-collecting privileges, and how much corruption (and where) there was. There's a common stereotype that tax collectors skimmed a certain amount for themselves, and I'm wondering how much truth there may be in this.
