I was trying to set up a spreadsheet for Vehicles, 2nd Edition (GURPS 3rd Edition) when I ran into a problem which doesn't have an errata and which doesn't seem to have been specifically addressed on the forum in previous threads. So I'm looking for help and hoping that it's not too, too late for a solution to a 3rd Ed. problem. Incidentally, I don't consider telling me that GURPS 3rd Ed, or Vehicles 2nd Ed are broken or that I should buy 4th Ed. Spaceships to be help.
MUA (Maximum Upwind Angle) was a new statistic introduced at VXi9 with the statistic for various sails and rigs given in the Expanded Sails Table on the same page. The effects of MUA on sailing are given in the Expanded Movement Rates and Sailing Table on VXi30. So far, so good, except...
The first two lines of the table on VXi30 are for On the bow (tacking) and On the bow where the two angles combined cover 0°-85° with MUA splitting the two. The problem being that only Square Rigs are given speeds for this. Full Rigs and Fore-and-Aft Rigs get a '-' for both lines, which since the line on the quarter has 100% for speed, would imply that the '-' means they can't do it at all. That wouldn't be a problem, except...
Of the three square rigs in the table on VXi9, only the Asymmetric spinnaker has a MUA angle less than 85°, so the distinction between being on the bow and tacking only applies to one sail type of all the Square Rigs but doesn't apply to any of the 11 Fore-and-Aft Rig sail types or the three Full Rig sail types, even though every last one of those 14 sail types has a MUA that is less than 85°. It seems likely to me that this is an error, so...
Should the on the bow figures on VXi30 apply to the Full Rig and Fore-and-Aft Rigs as written for Square Rigs, or should they have different figures and if they do apply to those Rigs as written, should Square Rigs (other than the Asymmetric Spinnaker) have a '-' entry and if those figures are in error are the Abeam speeds still correct for the Rigs or did they end up getting transposed/garbled as well? (On the quarter and Astern don't matter as the speeds are the same regardless of rig or sail type.)
Thanks in advance for whatever light you can shed on this.
