Ram Cars. Cost and Division Effectiveness?

samedi 11 avril 2015

Two major issues in autodueling, and designing a car, is weapon accuracy and endurance. Lasers (and if using them Sonic Cannons) seem to answer both, but are expensive. Extra magazines or high capacity ammo weapons are heavier, and targeting computers costly.

OTOH on the surface the Ramplate seems to be a cheap solution to these issues. A big slab of hardened armor, accurate since Ramming Always Works, and no ammo.

Well kinda. You still need to maneuver for a reasonable ram. Head to head is too much chance of hitting much harder than you want to. Rear ends tend to be low net speeds for all that you are coming in on the most vulnerable aspect. T-Bones seem to be the compromise of choice, you can control the impact damage better and have a decent shot at reaching the crew and getting the kill. Plus you are likely to lose speed in the crash, and have to build it up again.

On the down side, besides the threat of tire shots, you do have ammo. Your front armor is effectively your ramplate's 'ammo'. Worse it is variable use depending on how fast you hit (which you do control) and how well you roll (which you don't). Roll right, and you might pulp your target, and not have enough (or any!) armor left to go after a second kill. Or a bad damage roll can leave you stuck in his side, and vulnerable to anyone who wants a shot.

So, in terms of costs is a ramplate worth it over using that for guns? Are certain divisions, specifically good or bad for ramcars? Any ideas if after a certain point weapons get too accurate and/or deadly for ramcars to compete?
