So, I'm working on modifying a lot of DF gear to be more in line with LT, and I've run into a problem. Rather than simplifying Personal Basics, I felt it would be appropriate to actually have the individual items available, and to that end went about creating a tinderbox. The problem I came across is that a waterproof wooden box capable of holding enough tinder to start 10 fires (I assume Enhanced Tinder has density comparable to mushrooms, normal tinder being twice as dense but it being necessary to use twice as much by weight to start a fire) weighs 1.5 lb and costs around $15. However, a waterproofed leather bag of the same capacity weighs only 0.6 lb, and my estimate puts the price at around $7. That is, it's around half the weight and half the cost.
So... what am I missing? Why were tinderboxes used rather than tinderpouches? Are my price estimates too far off and a pouch would have actually cost more? Is it just that the first guy to come up with the idea made it as a box and nobody bothered to "improve" on it? Would a tinderpouch be somehow less convenient or fashionable than a tinderbox? Was wood used to insure you could get some emergency kindling (by breaking the box), just in case? Does wood "breathe" better than waterproofed leather, allowing you to toss damp tinder in there and have it dry out? Was the difference in weight so small that nobody cared?
