A rule for group skill use (Survival , Stealth, Soldier) where some members with the skill need to carry those without it appears in various supplements, including at least Action 2: Exploits (p. 5) and DF2: Dungeons.

The rule says to start with the highest skill, add the number of people who have the skill, and subtract the size of the group.

As far as I can tell, this is mathematically the same thing as "take the highest skill and subtract the number of people without the skill". Why we would ever take time to add, the re-subtract people who have the skill seems really weird. Am I missing something?

Also, this means that a single Survival 15 tribesman helping 2 people across the jungle needs to roll 13 or less; a pack of sixty skilled tribesmen (with the highest skill among them at 15) covering for 2 people is also at 13. You'd think diluting the unskilled among a sea of skilled survivalists would help.

People with the skill simply do nothing (which is weird enough), but the rule actively counts them (then removes them).

Any insight?
