Possible variation on High Pain Threshold.

High Pain Threshold is an extremely valuable Advantage for anyone who regularly engages in combat. Never having to worry about Shock penalties after you've been hit is fantastic, and the assorted selection of +3 to different rolls is great as well. Every melee fighter I've ever made has had it.

But I have to admit I don't particularly like it. The inability to feel pain has been documented, but that's really a Disadvantage. High Pain Threshold seems to be trying to represent the ability to feel pain, but shrug it off. I'd personally say that's something that works better as a function of the characters willpower. So I've come up with the following idea for a house-rule: Characters with High Pain Threshold must succeed a roll against Will+3 after taking damage to ignore the Shock penalties associated, this Will roll gets a -1 per 10 points of injury sustained.

This does a few of things, it rewards characters with a range of Attribute scores, something I'm always in favour of, and it also means that more damaging attacks are more likely to cause Shock penalties. It also opens up the possibility for a lower level of High Pain Threshold, that provides no bonus to the Will roll, or any of the other things that HPT normally adds to, this would probably cost 5 points.

This obviously isn't necessary for all games, sufficiently cinematic games should have characters who can totally ignore all pain, but I rather like it for more realistic games.

Thoughts?
