Power Factors from Car Wars translation?

jeudi 23 avril 2015

Hi Folks,
Question:

Does "Power factors" in CAR WARS COMPENDIUM have direct relationship to "Watts" as far as computing top speed?

The Car Wars formula for Top speed for an electric power plant is:

360 * PF/(PF + Weight of vehicle)

The formula I'm using to translate this more into something akin to that found in GURPS VEHICLES is:

Max Speed = Power^.61 * Mass^.61/Mass * .8 * 2.24

(The original formula gave speed in meters per second as (Power in watts * Mass)^.61 with a correction factor of * .8 if the vehicle were wheeled. To convert from Meters per second to Miles per hour, multiply by 2.24)

This is from another role playing source where the values seem to be in the same ballpark as the formula used by GURPS VEHICLES 2nd edition.

Net result, when I try to solve for Power factor in Watts...

Power in Kilowatts = (Speed in MPH/2.24/.8*Mass in kg/mass)

When I used a vehicle that massed 1000 kg (or 2200 lbs) as a sample case, in order to get a speed of 140 miles per hour via the one formula (Car Wars Compendium), I had to have an output of about 104.946 Kilowatts.

When I changed the vehicle's weight to 4400 lbs (or 2000 Kg), the max speed for such a vehicle in CAR WARS COMPENIUM was 86.89 miles per hour. But when I plugged in the values using the formula for Watts, the engine output dropped from 104.946 Kw to 74.796 Kw for the same 1400 Power Factor engine.

This leads me to conclude that Power Factors do not have a direct relationship to Kilowatts in GURPS VEHICLES.

Anyone else want to take a stab at this - on the presumption that I messed up the math somehow?
