At the end of the novel A Storm of Swords, Stannis Baratheon and his army arrived unexpectedly at the wall, where they helped defeat the Wildling army.
Why did Stannis do this? It's a long way from Dragonstone to the wall.
My theory is that he is did it for legitimacy. He strengthened his claim to the throne by doing the kingly duty of defending the realm.
