Fantasy Industrial Revolution Setting

dimanche 3 mai 2015

As it says on the tin, I'm trying to think up a fantasy industrial revolution. It's a big challenge. I have several different possible paths that could be followed, to varying degrees, and I'm not sure which ones to use:

* Wizards come up with better ways to cast enchantments, which makes enchantments more accessible. Cue a few enterprising enchanters, and things start to really take off.

* Someone comes up with a way to "Awaken" low levels of Magery in a significant portion of the populace. Then new glut of low level mages allows mages to be used for all sorts of tasks that they were previously in too much demand for. Draining and ventilating mines, preserving food, shaping stone, blessing crops, etc.

* The secrets on how to communicate with nature spirits and elementals become public knowledge. This results in craftsmen being able to make deals with such entities to perform various tasks.

* A deity or deities becomes much more interventionist, having their preists offer significant blessings in exchange for worship.

* A Political and/or Cultural Revolution takes place, leading to magic being used for things it would not have been used for before.

* Some other reason for industrialization? I suppose I kinda need a reason for people to have pursued these paths, even when they became possible. What kind of impetus would make people pursue industrialization?

For the setting, by default I'd go for something with Ritual Path Magic, several non human races, and D&D style polytheism. And maybe lot's of monsters? That could be a good reason to industrialize...
