(I tried to raise this issue several months ago and that thread disappeared without comment or PM - since the problem is still present and seems to be increasing, I'm posting again).
As a long time Tor user, I've been encountering increasing difficulties viewing posts here due to a progressive increase in the number of nodes being banned from accessing this forum. Some examples of blocked nodes include:
18.187.1.68 (sipbtor)
37.187.7.74 (wommelator)
46.165.221.166 (blanqui)
62.210.69.5 (TelosTorExit2)
77.109.139.28 (spfTOR5e3)
77.109.141.138 (spfTOR1e1)
77.109.141.139 (spfTOR1e2)
77.244.254.229 (chaoscomputerclub29)
109.163.234.5 (hessel2)
176.126.252.12 (aurora)
178.32.181.96 (PrivacyRepublic0001)
198.100.148.112 (eadgbe)
Now I understand that Tor, like other online services, is subject to abuse and that this forum, like so many, has to deal with a plague of spammers. However blocking access on the basis of IP address alone fails to distinguish between innocent and malicious users and prevents viewing as well as posting.
There are alternatives to curb abuse (blocking signups rather than blocking access completely or better, placing such signups in a special group with more posting restrictions until a poster has earned more trust).
Given that Tor is one of the few tools available that can frustrate NSA/GCHQ snooping and those of other spy agencies, it would be a pity to see any forum or company inadvertently discourage its use.
However if SJG would prefer to block Tor completely, then information on doing so can be found here. Doing so would exclude those who wish to protect their online privacy, but if forum admins see this as a lesser issue then an all-out ban would make more sense than playing whack-a-mole with Tor users and volunteers.
