Avengers 2 - Good movie, I liked it, one thought remained after the initial glow faded: How the heck has Tony Stark avoided being arrested as an international war criminal?
I realize after the first movie that the Avengers have amazing worldwide popularity. The idea of aliens invading New York only to be stopped by genuine real live superbeings would play well on every screen in the entire world.
Not so much after this movie.
Don't want to spoiler anything, but the biggest legal problems for the Avengers can be fairly easily deduced from the trailers:
First: The Avengers can (and do) drop in anywhere they like with what amounts to a small but very powerful army. Anywhere in the world. I don't think it is much of a spoiler to say they are after whoever has Loki's scepter - but you can be damn sure they didn't ask permission of the country in question to capture this individual. Property damage and injuries (and fatalities!) among the force guarding this individual are glossed over but obviously exist.
Second: The big green elephant in the room. Banner (a.k.a. The Hulk) is a weapon of mass destruction in his own person. NOBODY would allow him anywhere near their borders if they had even the tiniest bit of sense. Nonetheless as you can guess from that scene of Iron Man suiting up in the Hulkbuster(tm) armor Banner loses all control in the middle of a major metropolitan area - Small surprise here: It wasn't inside the continental United States. Property damage was extensive.
Third: The big finale about which I can say little without spoiling a lot. You thought the scale of the damage in the first movie was bad?
The upshot of all of this led me to ask a friend 'So how many laws did the Avengers break?'. To which he replied 'All of them?'.
What is the group mind's take on why the Avengers have not been arrested and/or sued into oblivion? I can sort of believe Captain America having some form of legal authority to arrest people under international law (maybe Hawkeye too, maybe not) but the rest of these people? Tony Stark must have the most awesome PR department in human history is all I can come up with.
