Would it be possible to cast a maintained spell, then the same one before the previous' effect ends, and so on? Would the maintenance costs then be adressed separately? That would make it a lot easier for high skill to nullify maintenance cost for greater effects.
Take for example a mage with Create Fire at 25, in two different scenarios:
a) He casts it for a 4-yard radius. After cost reduction due to high skill, he spends 5 energy for casting, and 1 every minute for maintaining. He's covered up to 37 hexes (see Area Spells on a Battle Map, p. B239) with fire, sustainable until that 1/min tires him out.
b) He casts it for a 3-yard radius. He spends 3 energy for casting, and maintenance is free for him. Then he casts it again for a 3-yard radius, paying 3 energy again. He's covered up to 19x2=38 hexes with fire, sustainable until... well, until he falls asleep or off a cliff.
At first the idea seemed slightly cheesy, but there would be tradeoffs in regards of time spent (as it has to be cast repeatedly), risk of failure via lower skill (as each successive casting carries a -1 penalty for each previous one that's still "on"), and possibly energy expenditure (in the example above, 1 extra FP in the immediate cost), so I've started to find myself more open to the idea.
Anyway, thoughts on whether it's fine by RAW and/or your own taste?
Maintaining multiple instances of the same spell?
