End of Ars Magica 5th Edition

samedi 16 mai 2015

David Chart is to retire from the position of Line Editor, at the end of this year, and after the publication of a few more in-the-works supplements, there will be no more Ars Magica 5th Edition. There might be a 6th, later, but no guarantee.

This saddens me, given that Ars Magica is one of very few RPG systems with a well-thought-out advantage/advantage component to character creation (in the core book, as an intrinsic and non-optional part of the system, and and choice-based character creation too - no dice in 5th!) to truly individualize the characters made by the players.

Next after GURPS and Quest FRP v2.1, Ars Magica is probably the system that most influenced my Sagatafl homebrew project (in particular the degree of care about how fast characters can change - differences in learning potential are ignored almost completely by almost all other RPG systems), and I also find many of the supplements very valuable for any medieval fantasy campaign (not just Mythic Europe), especially "Medieval Handbook" but also many others. My very first encounter with Ars was when I purchased the excellent "Medieval Tapestry".

5th was also a very clean and well-designed system. I had serious problems with 4th, and don't know enough about earlier editions to have a real opinion, but 5th fixed all the major problems I had with 4th.
