So, digging around in Spaceships again for a space opera I'm putting together, and once again, I find myself running up against a problem when it comes to combining vehicles/devices found in UT vs similar technology created with Spaceships (one of the reasons I gave up on one of my more realistic sci-fi setting was that it featured close integration of spaceships and ground forces and this just did not work, so I thought a sillier setting might work better to combine the two. It seems not).
Weighing in at 1,500 tons, we have a DR 4000 shield with a total SM of +7
In GURPS Spaceships, the soonest I can get to a TL 11 DR 4000 shield is an SM +12 Heavy screen with a total weight of 5,000 tons. That's more than 5,000x times as heavy.
Given that most tanks are SM+5, the best DR I can get out of a shield at that weight is +400 (one TENTH. And yes, I am aware that the DRs given in Spaceship are dDR, but it gives a dDR of 20, which doubles as a heavy screen to 40, which translates, on a standard scale, as DR 400). These will weigh in at over 1 ton, though the cost is the same and you could argue that the excess weight is just an artifact of the system, but the DR is a tenth of the tank's DR. Even if I go with a medium force screen, that's still 5x too much. It's only a light force screen that gets to the proper weight.
The only thing I can see that I'm doing wrong is that SS discusses "cosmic" shields later that have 10x the DR, which would give me a heavy screen, weighing ~1 ton, costing the appropriate 1.5 million, and a DR of 4000. Are UT force screens cosmic?
